BREAK A LEG!

Does that expression bother you at all?
Maybe because I have four prosthetic joints, I tend to "cringe" a bit at this common saying.

During our recent run of "Fiddler On The Roof" I heard the above expression a zillion times and wondered if the young thespians who wished it to each other, had any idea what they were saying.  I needed to find out its origin, so I Googled it.

Apparently in ancient times the audience conveyed approval for theatrical presentations by stomping with their feet, rather than applauding with their hands.  If the performance was exceptional, evoking a wildly enthusiastic response, some in the audience could actually stomp so hard that they broke a leg!

Well, after two full, exhausting months of rehearsals and set painting, my foray into community theatre has come to an end.  It was a great experience and we were all proud of the finished product...lots of applause and NO broken legs!

Here are some photos to capture my memories:

While songs such as "Tradition,"  "Sabbath Prayer," "Sunrise, Sunset," "The Rumor," and "Anatevka" will forever remind me of the summer of 2012, the themes in this play remind me to be thankful for God's blessings!
Mazeltov!

  1. Morning Jessica,
Was just thinking about you last night and thinking I need to contact her and see if she is okay. So it was good to see you post today, or at least I didn't see it till today.

Loved your pics........you looked so great as the matchmaker and bet you did a fabulous job playing the part. Are you catching your breathe now?? lol
I would imagine that entails quite a bit of work, even tho it is fun work!

Well, so glad you had fun doing it, and all those songs will be very nice reminders for you,
somehow music or songs remind me of certain times in my life..........probably true for all
    of us really.

Well, glad to see you back in blogland.
Now time to get back to book writing! lol
but after a lil rest first, of course!

    Love ya, Nellie

  3. You're amazing, Jess. Maybe some day I'll take on the theater. My father was the head of the drama department at Asbury Seminary, and I had a few seasons of stage life in some of his productions. Right now, I'm happy to be an audience participant and celebrate the giftings of others. I wish I could have taken in your debut!

    Blessings.

  6. Well I feel much better now, knowing what "break a leg" means. Yes it did always bother me to hear that expression but now it makes some sense! (thank you). I SO admire what you did here Jess!!!!! What a fantastic musical to be a part of, and to think you did something "new to you" is just amazing. I so wish I had your courage. I think I do miss out on a lot of the fun of life by not being able to step too far out of my comfort zone. You are a real inspiration lady!!! The photos are fantastic! Memories to last a lifetime! So proud of you! I'm with Rebecca...WHAT'S NEXT??
